A New York court issued a temporary restraining order on Sunday prohibiting the Trump administration from using taxpayer funds to finance political advertisements. The decision follows a lawsuit arguing that the ads, which began airing in late September, were designed to promote Republican candidates.

Manhattan District Judge Jennifer Rochon's ruling temporarily freezes the broadcast of the ads. The decision came after the transparency organization Common Cause, along with other plaintiffs including a public employees union and a House candidate in Alabama, petitioned the court to halt the campaign before the weekend to prevent airing during football games and Saturday Night Live.

The plaintiffs argued that the spots are not a public service, but rather political propaganda aimed at influencing the upcoming elections. Common Cause CEO Virginia Kase Solomon stated that the organization will not stop until the administration is held fully accountable, emphasizing that no president from any party should ever waste public funds on propaganda.

In response, the U.S. President defended the campaign, explaining that the ads constitute a positive promotion of the country. However, the administration had planned to halt public funding even before the judge's decision, with the White House announcing that the president's political action committee will finance the campaign moving forward.
