Knesset Speaker's primary campaign: "The Supreme Court orders — and Ohana ignores"

Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana launched his Likud primary campaign this evening (Monday), focusing on an attack on the Supreme Court. In the video, which concludes with the caption "Amir Ohana to the front," he boasts of his struggle against the judicial system and echoes headlines regarding his threats not to respect Supreme Court rulings and his boycotting of Supreme Court President Isaac Amit and Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara.

"We fought the judicial system more than any of our predecessors," he said.

The video of the Knesset Speaker — a position that is supposed to be state-oriented — collects several "peak" moments from the last term, including threats not to respect a Supreme Court ruling, the boycotting of the Supreme Court President and the Attorney General, and opposition to holding repeat elections for the State Comptroller after the Supreme Court disqualified the appointment of Adv. Michael Ravilo following the farce of documenting votes in an election that is supposed to be secret. Regarding this, Ohana echoed the words of MK Gilad Kariv in the plenum: "The Supreme Court orders — and Amir Ohana ignores."

"This is the Knesset that fought the hegemony, and I will even say the corruption of the judicial system, more than any of its predecessors," he is heard saying in one of the interviews. Ohana also echoed news headlines that declared: "Knesset Speaker threatens 'We will not accept the Supreme Court ruling'" and "Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana with a threatening message to the Supreme Court."

Another headline echoed concerned the boycotting of the Supreme Court President and the Attorney General from various events hosted by the Knesset. Added to this was his justification for the boycott:

"He who harms the Knesset is he who cancels its laws, he who systematically disrespects the people and their representatives — and not he who is not prepared to bow his head and send an invitation to a festive event."

Also added to the video were his memorable words before the Supreme Court hearing on the petitions to cancel the reasonableness standard and the incapacity law, in which he declared that "the Knesset will not accept its trampling with submission."

"He who respects — will be respected. Respecting authorities is not one-way. The Knesset has had its say; that the Supreme Court has other opinions — that is its own," Ohana is heard saying. "The trampling of the Knesset by the judicial system is a severe blow to Israeli democracy."
