Brazilian Man Travels 2,100 Kilometers After Falling for AI-Generated Woman
A Brazilian construction worker traveled 2,100 kilometers to meet an AI-generated woman he met online, only to discover she did not exist, highlighting a growing trend of digital scams.

A Long Journey for a Fake Romance
How far would you travel for love? Ademar Rocha Martins, a 49-year-old construction worker from Brazil, was convinced he had found the woman of his dreams. Packing his belongings, he boarded a bus and traveled more than 2,100 kilometers to meet a woman he met on social media. After more than 36 hours on the road, he arrived at his destination only to discover a heartbreaking reality: the woman did not exist at all.
The unusual incident took place this week in Brazil. Martins, a resident of Imperatriz in Maranhão state, encountered videos on social media featuring a woman who introduced herself as Jessica Oliveira. Jessica claimed to be a widow living on a large farm in Minas Gerais, looking for a partner and a fresh start. In her videos, she even promised a comfortable life, stating, "I want you to come to my farm and never have to work a day in your life again."
The Illusion Shattered in Belo Horizonte
Suffering from severe loneliness after the loss of his mother, Martins believed he had found an opportunity for a new life. He corresponded via Facebook and Kwai with someone he believed was Jessica. On October 9, he embarked on a lengthy journey to Belo Horizonte, arriving two days later.
Upon arrival, reality quickly set in. After asking locals and searching for the farm, he turned to a local journalist who revealed that the woman was a digital creation generated by artificial intelligence. Left stranded without money for a return trip, municipal welfare services provided him with food, temporary shelter, and a bus ticket to Tocantins state.
"Sometimes loneliness inside the house causes many problems in life. That is why I came to search for her," Martins told the Brazilian radio station Itatiaia.
Growing Phenomenon of AI Catfishing
It was later discovered that the digital persona of Jessica had amassed over 300,000 followers on TikTok, used primarily for marketing and driving views. Operators of the account clarified that the character was AI-generated and that they never engaged in personal conversations with Martins.
Local reports noted this was the third such incident within six months in Belo Horizonte involving men deceived by AI-generated romance content. Martins urged others to learn from his experience, warning that anyone can fall into such traps.
