Bob Dylan Meets Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican During Italian Tour
Bob Dylan met with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican on Wednesday. The 85-year-old music legend and the American pontiff exchanged autobiographies and rosaries during their brief Apostolic Palace audience.

Legendary singer-songwriter Bob Dylan visited the Vatican on Wednesday, meeting with Pope Leo XIV during a break in his Italian concert tour. The 85-year-old artist and the 71-year-old American-born pontiff exchanged traditional gifts during their brief audience at the Apostolic Palace, according to Vatican officials.
A Meeting of Icons and Exchange of Gifts
Known for his considerable self-appreciation, Dylan presented the Pope with a copy of his autobiography, Chronicle: Volume One. In return, Pope Leo XIV gifted the iconic musician a rosary. Dylan arrived dressed in a dark hoodie that gave him a monk-like appearance, accessorized with a loosely knotted polka-dot tie, while the pontiff wore his traditional white papal vestments.
Historical Ties and Spiritual Parallels
This encounter follows Dylan's historic 1997 meeting with Pope John Paul II in Bologna, where the musician performed three songs and prompted the late pontiff to improvise a theological reflection on the lyrics of Blowin in the Wind. Pope Leo XIV, who previously quoted Dylan's 1963 protest song Go Away You Bomb in the foreword of a disarmament book, continues a growing trend of papal engagements with contemporary cultural figures, having previously met with artists such as Bad Bunny and Patti Smith.
