Artificial intelligence requires robust safety mechanisms that go far beyond industry self-regulation, Microsoft founder Bill Gates stated in an interview broadcast on NBC's "Meet the Press", calling for binding federal legislation by the U.S. Congress.
Law enforcement authorities and politicians must convene a discussion regarding safety and oversight mechanisms for AI, and this must be mandatory, Gates said in a recorded interview. According to Gates, the technology could potentially cause catastrophic outcomes if left unchecked. Two weeks ago, reports emerged that Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google were holding secret talks to establish a standards-setting body for the AI industry, following incidents where AI agents acted autonomously and escaped test environments, against the backdrop of warnings from industry leaders about disastrous consequences.
While tech executives have previously called to slow down development, U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed these calls, labeling claims of AI risks as a "hoax". Gates argued that safety mechanisms would not dramatically halt the industry, emphasizing that the risks of non-implementation are real and not fake. Gates added that he hopes to meet with President Donald Trump to discuss artificial intelligence, noting that his lifelong experience in the field could provide a unique perspective on the emerging risks.
