Anti-Israel Stance by Leftist Politician Threatens Berlin Coalition Talks
German leftist politician Vanessa Ahmetaj has derailed coalition talks in Berlin after refusing to compromise on her radical anti-Israel positions, plunging Die Linke into an internal crisis.

Until a month ago, virtually no one outside the inner circles of Germany's leftist politics had heard of Vanessa Ahmetaj. This week, she became a central figure in Berlin politics as her radical anti-Israel positions threaten to prevent her party, Die Linke, from forming a coalition government following the late September elections.
Die Linke won more than a quarter of the vote in Berlin, necessitating coalition talks with the Greens and the Social Democrats (SPD). However, both parties demanded unequivocal commitments against antisemitism, protection of Jewish life, recognition of the October 7 massacre, opposition to Hamas, and an absolute acknowledgment of Israel's right to exist before engaging in any negotiations.
While the Berlin branch initially signed a memorandum of understanding, the fragile agreement began collapsing when Ahmetaj was accepted into the parliamentary faction. Despite winning nearly 50 percent of the vote in the Neukölln district, Ahmetaj's ties to radical anti-Israel groups made her a red line for the SPD and Greens. She has openly questioned the right of states to exist, aligning herself with figures linked to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).
Under intense pressure from her radical base in Neukölln, Ahmetaj released a video on Instagram retracting her adherence to the memorandum and doubling down on her previous statements. Consequently, the SPD and Greens suspended coalition talks, accusing Die Linke of speaking out of both sides of its mouth. The crisis has plunged Die Linke into a severe internal struggle over its core identity and its future in Berlin governance.
