Film Critic Avner Shavit Joins Time Out After Leaving Walla Portal

A New Chapter for a Prominent Film Critic
Renowned Israeli film critic, journalist, and researcher Dr. Avner Shavit is joining the editorial team of Time Out. He will write film reviews, features, and cultural commentary.
This move follows Shavit's recent resignation from the Walla portal after 16.5 years, marking the fifth departure from Walla's culture department within three months. Now, the veteran critic has found a new home with their competitor.
A Unique Perspective from the United States
Shavit, who currently resides in the United States and lectures at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, brings a unique dual perspective to Time Out. Wesleyan is a well-known incubator for American creators, boasting alumni such as Lin-Manuel Miranda (creator of "Hamilton"), Mike White (creator of "The White Lotus"), and Matthew Weiner (creator of "Mad Men").
This academic and cultural immersion is reflected in Shavit's debut piece for Time Out, which focuses on the new film starring Israeli actress Gal Gadot. Shavit analyzes the public perception of Gadot in the U.S. and on social media, explaining why the criticism cannot be attributed solely to rising anti-Israel sentiment, while also demonstrating how some attacks transcend legitimate discussion of her acting skills.
Strengthening the Editorial Team
At Time Out, Shavit will work alongside Yael Shuv, the magazine's veteran chief film critic who has been with the publication since its inception. Shuv will continue to lead the film section, while Shavit's arrival is aimed at expanding the volume of cinema coverage and introducing an additional authoritative voice.
