The UEFA Champions League returned with two early matches, highlighted by Aston Villa securing a 3-2 away victory against Club Brugge, while AEK Athens defeated LASK Linz 1-0 in their tournament opener.

Club Brugge vs. Aston Villa (2-3)

Aston Villa headed to Belgium following a difficult start in the Premier League and three matches without a goal, yet they managed to kick off the league phase with an important win against Club Brugge, a side that reached the knockout stage in each of their previous three Champions League campaigns.

John McGinn put Aston Villa ahead in the 10th minute, and Hugo Vetlesen equalized nine minutes later. However, Emiliano Buendía restored the visitors' lead in the 22nd minute with a close-range finish. Right before halftime, Nicolas Jackson capitalized on a poor clearance by Yann Sommer to score his first goal for the club, before Nicolò Tresoldi pulled one back from the penalty spot in the 61st minute to make it 3-2. These were Aston Villa's first goals in nearly a month, following their defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Super Cup on August 12.

Match Action: Club Brugge vs. Aston Villa

  • Minute 10: Goal! A strong start and an early lead for Aston Villa as McGinn received a pass at the edge of the box and curled it into the far corner past Sommer.

  • Minute 19: Goal! Club Brugge leveled the score at 1-1 after Vetlesen met a cross from the left and finished into the far corner on the touch.

  • Minute 22: Goal! Aston Villa took a 2-1 lead following a brilliant run down the right flank by João Gomes, who left two defenders behind and squared the ball for Buendía to finish from close range.

  • Minute 43: Goal! Aston Villa extended their lead to 3-1! Nicolas Jackson scored his first goal for the club after a long ball caught Sommer out of his box, allowing the striker to round the keeper and roll it into an empty net.

  • Minute 61: Goal! A handball inside the box led to a VAR review and a penalty kick, which Tresoldi converted to reduce the deficit to 3-2.

AEK Athens vs. LASK Linz (1-0)

AEK Athens returned to the Champions League group stage for the first time since the 2018/19 season, defeating LASK Linz 1-0. This marked their first victory in the competition since November 2006, when they also secured a 1-0 win from a set-piece against AC Milan. This time, Răzvan Marin settled the match in the 21st minute by curling a brilliant free-kick from roughly 19 meters into the far corner, handing the Greek champions three points on their return to the grand stage.

The Greek side entered the match following a 5-0 victory over Aris Thessaloniki, remaining undefeated in regulation time this season with four clean sheets in seven matches across all competitions. Meanwhile, LASK Linz made their historic debut in the Champions League group stage after an unforgettable qualifying campaign that featured a dramatic comeback against Celtic.
