Aston Villa headed to Belgium following a difficult start in the Premier League and three matches without a goal, yet they managed to kick off the league phase with an important win against Club Brugge, a side that reached the knockout stage in each of their previous three Champions League campaigns.
John McGinn put Aston Villa ahead in the 10th minute, and Hugo Vetlesen equalized nine minutes later. However, Emiliano Buendía restored the visitors' lead in the 22nd minute with a close-range finish. This time, Răzvan Marin settled the match in the 21st minute by curling a brilliant free-kick from roughly 19 meters into the far corner, handing the Greek champions three points on their return to the grand stage.
The Greek side entered the match following a 5-0 victory over Aris Thessaloniki, remaining undefeated in regulation time this season with four clean sheets in seven matches across all competitions. Meanwhile, LASK Linz made their historic debut in the Champions League group stage after an unforgettable qualifying campaign that featured a dramatic comeback against Celtic.
