Called to the colors: Netanyahu continues to pressure Dermer to accept a spot on the Likud list
The Prime Minister has not given up on attempts to convince the former Minister of Strategic Affairs to return to the political arena. For now, the assessment is that the chances of the move being feasible are slim - despite their close relationship, as only last week Dermer took part in the preparatory meetings held by the PM's team ahead of the meeting with Trump.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not given up on attempts to convince former Minister Ron Dermer to return to political life and join the Likud list for the next Knesset. Despite the pressure, at this stage Dermer is not interested in returning to public life, and the assessment is that the chances of him agreeing to join the list are slim.
Dermer, who for years has been considered one of the closest and most influential people to Netanyahu, left the government in November 2025 after serving as Minister of Strategic Affairs and as the one who led, among other things, Israel's sensitive diplomatic contacts. After his resignation, he turned to the private sector, but has not cut ties with the Prime Minister's Office since.
In the political system, Dermer is described as someone who is "called up for reserve duty" whenever a significant diplomatic need arises. Thus, last week he participated in the preparatory meetings held by the Prime Minister's team ahead of the meeting with US President Donald Trump, and assisted mainly with coordination issues with the American administration.
Last November, Minister of Strategic Affairs Dermer submitted a letter of resignation to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Dermer claimed that it was a personal decision after he had promised his family that he would serve in the position for only two years, and extended his tenure further due to the security situation.
Dermer wrote:
"This government will be remembered both for the October 7th attack and for the management of the two-year, seven-front war that followed it."
Dermer added:
"On the day I was sworn in as a minister in the government, I promised my family that I would serve only two years in the position. I extended my tenure twice, with their blessing. The first time to work together with you to remove the existential threat posed by Iran's military nuclear capabilities, and the second time to end the war in Gaza on the terms set by Israel, and to bring our hostages home."
The Minister of Strategic Affairs thanked Prime Minister Netanyahu:
"I would like to thank you for the opportunity you gave me to serve close to your side in the last three years, and for the trust you placed in me to handle the most significant issues facing the State of Israel at this fateful hour."
