Canadian writer Anne Carson has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature for her bold and innovative work that reinvents contemporary literary forms through a creative dialogue with classical tradition.

The Nobel Committee stated that her work focuses on the intersection between a profound engagement with words and her poetic aspiration to grant them new meaning. Carson, who has combined poetry writing, translation, and university teaching throughout her career, defined exploring the origins of words as the starting point for all her work.

Born in Toronto in June 1950, Carson discovered her love for language and writing in high school thanks to a Latin teacher who also taught her ancient Greek. She later studied classics at the University of Toronto, embarking on a path of learning and research into Hellenistic culture that heavily influenced her work over the decades.
