British Prime Minister Andy Burnham accused Russia on Sunday of interfering in the 2016 Brexit referendum, warning that the Kremlin continues trying to influence political and democratic systems across Europe. This marks one of the clearest statements by a British prime minister regarding Russian interference in the historic vote.

The Podcast Revelation

Speaking on the podcast "The Rest Is Politics", Burnham said that upon taking office he requested a clear answer on whether Moscow was involved in trying to influence the vote. According to him, the response he received was unequivocal. "It is clear that Russia interfered," he said, while refraining from detailing the intelligence presented or the exact scope of the impact.

His statement breaks from the cautious approach of previous Conservative governments, which avoided concluding that Russia successfully influenced the referendum. A 2020 parliamentary Intelligence and Security Committee report strongly criticized British authorities for failing to properly investigate Russian meddling in Brexit.

Warning to Europe

Research following the referendum identified thousands of Russian-linked social media accounts promoting anti-EU and anti-immigration messaging designed to deepen societal divisions. Burnham argued that the British experience should serve as a warning to other European nations, particularly France and Germany.

"Europe must be more transparent about foreign interference to protect democratic institutions," Burnham said, noting he discussed the threat with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
