Canadian-American singer Alanis Morissette recently opened up about her harrowing experiences with postpartum psychosis during an appearance on Alex Cooper's podcast Call Her Daddy. The 52-year-old artist shared raw details about her mental health struggles following the births of her three children.

The Dark Reality of Postpartum Struggles

Morissette revealed that her condition worsened with each subsequent birth, noting that while she waited over a year to seek help after her first child, she broke down just three days after her third delivery. She described experiencing terrifying invasive thoughts and entering a state of psychosis where she felt entirely out of control.

I call it 'postpartum action' because it is definitely not just depression. Every time it got harder and harder, but I wanted to meet my kids so badly, so I just kept going, Morissette shared.

Flawed Advice and Industry Pressures

When she finally sought professional help, the singer encountered shockingly dismissive responses. One therapist infamously told her to simply cover her eyes when things got too bad. Morissette also reflected on the toll that early fame took on her life, recalling how she was signed to a record deal at age 14 by a room of men in suits whose legal jargon she couldn't understand.

Reflecting on her journey, she emphasized the need for a strong support system for new mothers, suggesting that every new mother should be surrounded by a community that cares for her and her baby to prevent profound suffering.
